Türkiye Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Democratic Vision

In a recent phone call, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed strong support for Somalia’s democratic transition, affirming that Turkey fully backs Somalia’s vision of development through democracy.

The conversation took place between Erdoğan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, amid deepening bilateral cooperation in security, development, and governance.

The statement comes at a crucial time as Somalia prepares for its first direct elections under a One Person, One Vote model, a historic shift from the clan-based system that has dominated Somali politics for decades.

Observers view Turkey’s endorsement as a significant boost to the legitimacy of Somalia’s democratization efforts and a signal of continued international backing for free and fair elections in 2026.

This latest development builds upon the long-standing partnership between the two nations, which has included infrastructure development, humanitarian assistance, military training, and most recently, increased security cooperation against al-Shabab.
